Papers for Printing: Hahnemuhle Collection

EXAMPLES OF PRINTS ON DIFFERENT PAPERS
There are many types of speciality papers for printing photographs.

We were introduce to a variety of papers manufactured by the German company Hahnemuhle. We examined just over a dozen types of papers that included Hahnemuhle FineArt, Baryta, canvas, bamboo papers, rice papers, photo rag papers in a variety of finishes (gloss, satin, matt and uncoated); textures (water colour, sketch, pastel, oil and acrylic, bamboo, rice, cotton and other fibres as well as different degrees of smoothness); brightness (white, bright white and no doubt others but we only saw these two brightnesses); different applications (traditional [oils, acrylic, water colour, sketching and others] and modern [traditional mechanical: silk-screen, reprographic to name a few and others inkjet and giclee printing]) and weights (from paper to boards).

These are high quality papers and board and in all honesty, need more detail examination and experimenting with before a personal conclusion to be made. In 2005, Hahnemuhle Digital FineArt Collection won the TIPA award for use in the photographic industry. According to the judging panel, the Hahnemuhle papers work equally well with thermal and piezo technology and with both dye and pigmented inks, providing a colour intensity and crispness not possible with non-coated art papers. The FineArt papers included a range of various textures and depth in comparison. They also remarked that the Hahnemuhle Digital FineArt papers are extremely light and age resistant if original UV pigmented inks are used.

I have experience of using Hahnemuhle papers. Last summer (before starting this diploma course), I had two of my designs printed by Giclee printers. I had two A3 prints done. One on canvas and one paper. The flat-colour design I had printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag 308gsm. The canvas I had printed on a different make (Media Breathing Colours Chromata White Canvas, 450gsm).

The two print-outs (unframed), at the total cost of £96.00.
